About Life Coaching

Psychotherapy is not for everyone. Clients seeking coaches are not looking for insight into emotional difficulties rooted in the past, nor are they looking for the expert to help them explore their psyche. Life Coaching is different from psychotherapy. Early in the process, I provide an in-depth assessment of what you want to achieve through the coaching process and how best to work together to eliminate negative belief patterns that limit you. My style is dynamic and engaging, helping my clients feel fully invested in this collaborative process. As a trained psychotherapist, I pay attention to resistance and conflicts in this process. My training as a yoga therapist and integrative therapist enables me to use holistic modalities that help you find balance, peace and respect for every aspect of your “self’ with an emphasis on helping you take responsibility for your happiness.

Phone coaching clients are men and women who are busy, self-directed, goal-oriented, high achievers with a well developed habit of personal accountability, who know that a focused process of challenging questions, objective feedback, perspective shifting, and action steps will bring them extraordinary results. Phone-coaching also works when it is geographically impossible to conduct face-to-face sessions.

Our work together includes:

Some additional helpful information on the coaching process…

Coaching is not therapy, but it can be therapeutic. Trained mental health professionals are naturals to move proactive clients to a status they so desire. Because they have the training to diagnose and assess both clinically and holistically, mental health professionals can assess environmental, social, economic, spiritual, physical and ethnic influences that shape their clients.

The coaching profession emerged from the corporate world to help business talent tackle obstacles that kept them from being effective or advancing in the field. Important aspects of coaching corporate talent can be applied to individuals in all walks of life dealing with a range of modern dilemmas. Coaching is essentially providing clients with a helping hand, a boast or a reality check. The problems a coach encounters tend to be environmental, cultural or situational and will help the client work through these issues with a much more problem-solving, focused and pragmatic approach. Individuals seeking a coach tend to be competent, successful and high-functioning, yet find themselves faced with a life difficulty or challenge. They may be busy professionals, but have difficulty carving out necessary time for their own needs and satisfaction. They may not have problems at all but need an objective eye or second opinion. Coaching can help people who are in a rut, have fallen off a path or are too stressed to step back and see the bigger picture. Coaches deal with a spectrum of concerns that include relationships, parenting, stress-reduction, productivity and issues related to self-esteem, decision making, time management, motivation and life goals and objectives.

Coaches have been described as “part consultant” and “part therapist” which appeals to potential clients for so many reasons. The therapist understands the roots of feelings and behavior, whereas coaching can inspire the individual to move forward and take action. One major difference between therapy and coaching is the nature of the relationship, which is viewed by client and coach as a collaborative alliance with feedback and two-way communication. A relationship of advice and support where the coach is often considered a role model, peer or mentor and perhaps one who has successfully navigated change or transition in their own lives.

A mental health professional in the role of a coach is trained to pay attention to boundary issues because they understand the repercussions of crossing lines and adhere to strict ethical obligations. Furthermore, a mental health professional is less likely to do things that inadvertently interfere with people’s emotional vulnerabilities. Coaches who are also therapists can and do discern when coaching is not enough and when therapy may be necessary.Individuals with true emotional problems require therapy. Coaching is never a replacement for psychological counseling.

The idea behind coaching is simple: Listen to what people want then help them to discover how to get it. Coaching is practical, goal-oriented and judgement-free. It can be motivating, encouraging and empowering and can help you navigate change and restore balance and fulfillment.

Life Coaching FAQs

What is coaching? Coaching is a positive, forward-thinking approach to determining and achieving extraordinary results to personal and professional challenges.

Professional coaches are trained to listen and observe, to customize our approach to meet the client’s needs and to uncover their solutions and strategies. Coaches believe that the client is naturally creative and resourceful and that their job is to provide support and to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity the client already possesses.   While the coach provides feedback and an objective perspective, the client is responsible for taking steps necessary to achieve their desired results.

Why hire a life coach?  Coaching works.   It’s supportive to have the assistance of someone who is non-judgmental, a good listener, and capable of thinking “outside the box” to help you make your life more manageable.

The International Coach Federation (ICF) reported that individuals experience the following outcomes as a result of working with a  life coach:

  • Increased self-awareness (67%)
  • Enhanced ability to manage stress  (57%)
  • Better goal setting (62%)
  • Self-discovery  (53%)
  • More balanced life  (60%)
  • Increased self-confidence  (52%)

How does coaching differ from therapy? Therapists, typically help heal past emotional wounds, and sometimes diagnose and manage mental illness. Coaches do not focus on problems. We see opportunities with clients and focus on solutions.  Coaches are forward thinking without dwelling on the past.

How long does the coaching process last?  The length of time a client and a coach work together depends on the needs and goals of the client. The minimum length of time is generally 3 months to allow the time and space for the client to develop a plan and to make changes.  Many successful people find that they’d like to work with a coach for years to stay at the top of their game.

How can I determine if coaching is right for me? To determine if you could benefit from coaching, start by summarizing what you would expect to accomplish in coaching. When someone has a fairly clear idea of their desired outcome, a coaching partnership can be a useful tool for developing a strategy for how to achieve that outcome with greater ease and speed. Since coaching is a partnership, also ask yourself if you find it valuable to collaborate, to have another viewpoint and to be asked to consider new perspectives. You hire a coach to challenge you! Also, ask yourself if you are ready to devote the time and energy into making real changes in your work or your life. If the answer is yes, then coaching may be a beneficial way for you to grow and develop.

Coaching provides an ongoing dynamic partnership designed to help clients reach their personal and professional goals. Coaches listen, observe, and ask empowering questions, tapping into your innate wisdom. This allows coaches to customize their approach to meet the client’s singular needs. The coach provides ongoing support to enhance skills and resources necessary for success while eliciting solutions and strategies from the client, trusting that they have the creativity, resourcefulness, and wisdom to capture their own answers.

What is the rate of return when you hire a life coach?  Your Return on Investment (ROI) is directly correlated to the amount of dedication you demonstrate toward your growth and development. You get what you give.
