Young Living Essential Oils & Integrative Therapy Techniques

During my yoga and integrative therapy training with the Urban Zen Foundation, I was introduced to Young Living Essential Oils as an adjunct modality to enhance a meditation or yoga practice. I fell in love with these oils and use them daily in my life and in my home. (a few personal favorites are Valor, Peace & Calming, Thieves, peppermint, cinnamon, frankincense, Clarity, sandalwood and geranium). I have also discovered how useful aromatherapy can be when clients are struggling with complex issues such as: healing from trauma, anxiety and mild depression, stress reduction and self-soothing when recovering from addictions and eating disorders. I regularly use these oils in my practice when treating patients using EMDR Therapy, Brainspotting and Somatic Experiencing techniques. Many integrative therapists and wellness practitioners artfully add aromatherapy and essential oil treatment to enhance their yoga, ayurvedic, massage, Reiki or Craniosacral practice as examples.  You can order here.

How does aromatherapy work? Essential oils can be used for a range of physical and emotional wellness applications, either single oils or complex blends all have an impact at the cellular level and the elegance of this treatment is that the oils easily pass through the blood-brain barrier better than many pharmaceuticals to enhance one's biochemistry. Essential oils are usually administered by one of three methods: diffused aromatically, applied topically, or taken internally as dietary supplements.

These therapeutic oils support the following:

  • balance hormones
  • lift spirits and stabilize moods naturally
  • enhance immune system functioning
  • detoxify and oxygenate the body
  • enhance emotional balance
  • increase physical vitality
  • enhance mental clarity
  • soothe painful emotional states
  • support a safe, green home
  • kill germs and other pathogens
How do we get oils quickly into the system? Through the olfactory nerve, to the pineal, pituitary, amygdala. When you breathe an oil into the system, and through the nasal cavity, it is first picked up by the neurons that hang down from the olfactory, right between the eyes at the top of the sinus cavity. Those oil molecules are carried within milliseconds into the center of the brain. Now they have found that through the inhalation of Essential Oils into the mid-brain system, they will cause a secretion of antibodies instantly, endorphins and neurotransmitters. Now we’re seeing a direct response on the immune system from the inhalation, and topical application of Essential Oils like none other that has ever been created.

The chemistry of essential oils is very complex: each one may consist of hundreds of different and unique chemical compounds. Moreover, essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs. The distillation process is what makes essential oils so concentrated. It often requires an entire plant or more to produce a single drop of distilled essential oil.
