What is an Essential Oil?

How do we get oils quickly into the system? Through the olfactory nerve, to the pineal, pituitary, amygdala. When you breathe an oil into the system, and through the nasal cavity, it is first picked up by the neurons that hang down from the olfactory, right between the eyes at the top of the sinus cavity. Those oil molecules are carried within milliseconds into the center of the brain. Now they have found that through the inhalation of Essential Oils into the mid-brain system, they will cause a secretion of antibodies instantly, endorphins and neurotransmitters. Now we’re seeing a direct response on the immune system from the inhalation, and topical application of Essential Oils like none other that has ever been created. ~D. Gary Young

The chemistry of essential oils is very complex: each one may consist of hundreds of different and unique chemical compounds. Moreover, essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs. The distillation process is what makes essential oils so concentrated. It often requires an entire plant or more to produce a single drop of distilled essential oil. ~Essential Oils Desk Reference Fourth Edition published by Essential Science Publishing

Freshly cultivated and steam distilled, the essential oils in Young Living’s collection are life-enhancing gifts from the plant kingdom, revered for centuries for their restorative properties to body, mind, and spirit. Superior to all other health supplements, Young Living’s therapeutic-grade essential oils deliver positive benefits to the body through smell, direct absorption into the skin, and by normal digestive processes. Cleansing, calming, stimulating, soothing, our aromatherapy essential oils bring balance to all systems of the body. ~Young Living Oils

Pure, Potent Remedies

Uplifting, protective, calming, and regenerating, essential oils are a unique gift from the natural world. Often referred to as “nature’s living energy” or the very essence of a plant, essential oils are aromatic liquids derived from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. They not only determine the plant’s aroma, but are vital for plants to grow, live, evolve, and adapt. Essential oils also help defend plants from insects, environmental conditions, and disease. Today, research shows that when used aromatically, applied topically, or taken internally, essential oils can calm, energize, balance, purify, and rejuvenate the mind and body.

Therapeutic Grade – The Young Living Essential Oil Standard

There is a significant difference between essential oils that simply smell good and those that are therapeutic-grade.

Independent laboratory testing proves that Young Living essential oils meet and often exceed industry requirements, and as stewards of nature’s plant remedies, Young Living maintains higher internal standards, built upon the magnitude of our own rigorous Quality Assurance requirements. This standard is known as “therapeutic-grade.” We established the Young Living Therapeutic Grade™ standard so you know that every essential oil Young Living or its partners distill or source has the proper blend of natural constituents and works exactly the way you expect. Because when it comes to essential oils, how well they work is what matters most. Even though perfume oils and fragrances smell good, they lack the natural plant properties that make healing possible. In order to achieve therapeutic-grade classification, each essential oil must achieve the designation naturally, without excess manipulation and refinement, and meet specific criteria in four key areas: Plants, Preparation, Purity, and Potency.

How to Use Essential Oils

Aromatherapy

  • Direct Inhalation - Inhaling certain essential oils heightens the senses and can have many positive effects on the mind and body. Directly inhale the oil from the bottle or place a drop or two into the palm and gently disperse in palm then inhale.
  • Diffusion - Use an oil diffuser to disperse oil in a micro-fine vapor into the air.
  • Humidifier - Fill a humidifier with water then place a tissue or cloth, sprinkled with a few drops of oil, in front of the escaping vapor. (Do not put essential oil in your humidifier. It will float on top of the water instead of rising with the water vapor and may damage your humidifier.)
  • Steam - Place a few drops of oil in hot water, cover your head and the container in a tent-like fashion with a towel, and breathe deeply and slowly.

Topical Application

  • Direct - Essential oils can be applied directly to the crown of the head, to the temples, behind the ears, over vital organs, to the feet, and many other locations. Dilution may be required. Carefully tip the oil bottle and place 2–3 drops in the palm of your hand or directly on the desired application area. If dropping oil in your hand, rub palms together in a circular motion and then massage oil onto the desired point of application. If applying directly to the desired area, use your hand to massage the oil in a circular motion onto the skin. Repeat if desired. Caution: Essential oils are very potent and some may be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply a carrier liquid like vegetable oil to the area to dilute. Please read label directions for each individual oil before using.
  • Massage - Essential oils can be used before, during, and after therapeutic massage.
  • Perfume - With natural, earthy, and exotic aromas, essentials oils can also be worn as perfume.

Internal Use - Some essential oils make excellent food flavorings or dietary supplements. To take essential oils internally, try these tips:

  • Capsule - Add several drops of oil into an empty capsule and swallow with water.
  • Water or Milk - Add 1–2 drops of oil to a glass of water or rice or nut milk.
  • Bread - Add 1–2 drops of oil on a piece of bread.
  • Cooking - Use oils in place of herbs and spices in your everyday cooking.
  • Blue Agave - Add 1–2 drops of essential oil into a teaspoon of Young Living’s Blue Agave sweetener.
  • Direct - Drop directly onto the tongue and swallow. Exercise extreme caution when using this method. Many essential oils are potent and should be tested by pouring a single drop onto a spoon and tasting a small portion to determine the amount of oil to be used.

Combining Your Yoga Practice With Essential Oil Treatment

When I teach privately or in a small group setting I love integrating the oils into yoga sessions.  To begin a session I may use an oil with properties known to facilitate energy, focus and purification.  To close a yoga session during Savasana,  I combine Reiki with oils that have restorative and calming properties. Essential oils naturally complement yoga by supporting physical and mental strength and focus through the science of aromatherapy. Essential oils are extremely versatile and have many practical applications in yoga, including techniques for complementing pranayama, meditation, relaxation, post-practice, and for cleansing and purifying. Essential oils are also used to activate and balance the energy centers – or Chakra Syste – of the body.

Essential Oil Therapy and Reiki Treatment

Aromatherapy describes a treatment which utilizes essential oils from plants to help the body balance itself. This promotes improved health and well-being. Essential oils are very powerful and potent, and most should not be used unless you have undertaken some kind of training. Some oils however, are very gentle and safe to be used by most people at home. Aromatherapy works primarily through your sense of smell. You inhale a scent which stimulates the olfactory pathways in the brain.  The essential oil blends can be applied to the skin using a dermal application. Within an hour or so, the blends are in the blood stream relieving stress and promoting healing in the body. They will exit the body many hours later through perspiration or bodily fluids. Many of the essential oils are used to relieve physical stress, enhance mood, reduce pain, increase mental clarity and focus, calm the mind and enhance immune system function.

How do you use essential oils such as Young Living Oils? Essential oils are blended with a carrier oil (an oil that is used as a base for an essential oil to prevent skin irritation) and applied to the skin. Blends can also be used in bath water, on compresses (both hot and cold), in facial steamers, in facial treatments, massage oils, body wraps, and in diffusers. The practice of aromatherapy is being utilized in hospitals and facilities that research and practice integrative medicine and therapies.
